We believe parents do the best they can with what they have. However, even when you have given your best effort, your child may continue to struggle. You may feel lost or confused as to why your child’s behavior is out of control or why they seem to shrink into a shell pushing everyone away.
No matter how bad it seems, REMEMBER THERE IS HOPE.
It is possible that your child is struggling to understand and deal with things they have experienced or witnessed. Traumatic, stressful, and adverse events children encounter can shake them to their core. Children can exhibit a host of difficulties such as anger problems, anxiety, depression, bipolar symptoms, learning difficulties, ADHD symptoms, academic underachievement, low self-esteem, developmental delays, or behavioral outbursts.
Parents may be aware of what is bothering their child, and other times CHILDREN MAY LOCK THEIR FEELINGS OR EVENTS THEY HAVE EXPERIENCED DEEP INSIDE, CONCEALING IT FROM EVERYONE.
Higher Horizons welcomes the opportunity to partner with you and your family. Families have found that trauma-informed treatment may improve children’s feelings and thoughts about themselves, improve children’s abilities to concentrate in school, enhance children’s behaviors, and also aid parents in identifying new ways to connect with and communicate with their child. Higher Horizons looks forward to partnering with you and your child along the road to restoration and growth. Click the link to schedule a free consultation.

Common Questions
What is trauma exposure or traumatic life events?
Trauma exposure occurs when a child experiences or witnesses a life-threatening situation, and the child believes someone was or could have been seriously injured. Children can have a hard time coping with the things they have experienced and witnessed. As a result, some children can exhibit emotional or behavioral problems. Remember we are all different. Children encountering the same situation can have different interpretations or reactions. Adults and children may also have different responses. As safe and supportive adults, it is important to seek assistance if you believe exposure to past or current life events is negatively affecting your child. Even if events occurred a long time ago, your child might still need some assistance.

What to expect during the first visit?
We will email you an intake form to complete before your first session. The first session is generally the therapist and parent/guardian. This provides an opportunity to discuss your concerns and your child’s needs openly.
How long are sessions?
The first therapy session is approximately 90 minutes, and follow-up sessions are about 50 minutes.
Assessment sessions are generally 90 minutes.
That depends on your struggles and your goals. Most clients are seen weekly or bi-weekly. For assessment appointments, the length of assessment sessions will be determined the presenting problems and the data collection process.
What generally occurs during an assessment session?
Interviews with children and parents generally take place, and children may also complete a series of tasks or activities to obtain information about their functioning. Parents and older children will fill out forms about the child’s behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. The interview structure for younger and middle age children is often play-based or activity based. Some assessment questions or concerns will involve interviewing or obtaining information from collateral sources, such as a teacher or other adults working with your child, as well as classroom observations. The overall assessment process will differ depending on your child’s age, needs, and referral question.
